Currency

The currency is the Mauritian rupee (Rs), divided into 100 cents (cents).

1 euro is about the value of 40 rupees..
There are coins of 1, 5, 10 and 20 rupees, and 5, 20 and 50 under. The Notes are in denominations of 25, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 rupees.

Payment methods

  • No restrictions are imposed on imports of foreign currency in the form of bank drafts, letters of credit, traveler’s checks.
  • Credit cards are accepted by banks and most hotels, restaurants and tourist shops.
    The following cards are negotiable in Mauritius: American Express, Diners, MasterCard and Visa.
    Traveler’s checks and bank notes can be exchanged on arrival and departure of international flights at the airport. The exchange can also be done at major hotels.
  • ATMs are available in all major conurbations. Banks are open Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 3 pm.
  • The service is always included in the price. Tipping is at the discretion of the customer.

VAT

A value added tax of 15% increases all invoices related to the purchase of goods and services, including hotel bills and restaurant.
