Season and Weather

In Mauritius, as in all Indian Ocean islands, the seasons are reversed from the Northern Hemisphere. When it is winter in France, it’s summer in Mauritius!

The year is divided into two major seasons: austral summer and austral winter … Even if temperatures vary little between the two seasons, we are far from the winter temperatures in Europe … Mauritius benefits from the pleasant soft tropical weather of the southern hemisphere.

October, November, December in Mauritius: the dry-season

From October the heat settles in day (up to 82 ° F), evenings and nights are warmer, the sea is around 79 °F. The rains are rare and the winds virtually non-existent. These conditions make it a popular season for travel courses in Mauritius.

Among the times that we recommend:
  • For a family trip, holidays of All Saints in late October / early November
  • The first three weeks of December: certainly the most advantageous time and nice to look at the hot, dry climate on the one hand, and promotional offers exciting hotels.

January, February and March: the austral summer moves

The austral summer settles in late December and lasts until late March. The days are particularly hot, with temperatures easily climbing to 86 °F or more, but the sea breeze mitigates always this feeling of intense heat. On the greens, beware of the sun particularly aggressive between 10 am to 3pm: choose sunscreens with high protection factor. It is a pleasant season for fans of swimming, diving or watersports, the lagoon being up to 82 ° F…
Be aware that this is also the season of tropical storms or hurricanes (very rare since it has been noted a cyclone in Mauritius once every 15 years). If this period can cause several days of rain, be aware that hotels are secure in case of severe depression, and everything is done to make your stay more enjoyable.

April in Mauritius: the month of transition to the austral winter

With November and December, the month of April is probably the most attractive time to stay in Mauritius. Predominantly dry, daytime temperatures are less scorching and the nights warmer than in previous months. The sea is still warm, around 79 ° F.

[(A tip: It is the ideal month for a family trip to Mauritius with your kids of all ages as the temperatures of air and water are really nice. Plan your holiday months in advance to have a choice of hotels and offers that match your needs.

May, June, July, August, September: the austral winter in Mauritius

The winter season in Mauritius has not the same meaning that in our cold countries… The average temperatures are around 77 ° F if the weather is sunny. Evenings and nights are cooler, temperatures are subject to drop to 59 ° F. Rainfall can be more frequent but as scattered and fine showers. Swimming is pleasant with a sea at 75 ° F in the lagoon. Sunscreen of factor 30 is enough to protect you during the hottest hours. A sweat will also be necessary if you want to enjoy dinner with your feet in the sand.

At this time, it is a great opportunity for a spa vacation in Mauritius, special relaxation and well-being, most hotels will offer a program concocted daily or on a weekly basis. Another feature of the austral winter: the presence of trade winds blowing from the southeast between 10 and 20 knots. Particularly strong on the south and east coasts, these are the coasts to prefer if you are a fan of kitesurf… For golfers, we suggest a hotel in the north or west to be better protected!
